The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that the southwest monsoon is set to arrive in Kerala within the next 24 hours โ almost a week ahead of its normal June 1 onset. This marks the earliest monsoon arrival in 16 years, last recorded on May 23 in 2009 and 2001. Following this early onset, the IMD has issued weather alerts across 15 states, warning of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds.
Due to the development of a low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea, which may intensify further by May 24, turbulent weather is expected to hit coastal and interior regions. IMD forecasts indicate potential heavy to very heavy rainfall in Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya over the coming days.
IMD has placed several districts in Kerala under red alert till May 27 due to very heavy rainfall. Goa is also on red alert until May 25, with coastal Karnataka districts โ including Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Shivamogga, and Chikkamagaluru โ expecting intense rainfall during this period.
Orange alerts have been issued in six states, including parts of Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. In Gujarat, districts like Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, and Gir Somnath are likely to experience thunderstorms with strong winds. Telangana is forecasted to receive moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning in several districts.
In Tamil Nadu, moderate rainfall and lightning are expected in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Nilgiris, and Coimbatore. Similarly, Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara, Odisha’s Kandhamal, and Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla may also witness moderate showers with lightning.
Bihar faces storm alerts, with wind speeds expected to reach up to 50 km/h on May 24. Rainfall is likely to continue till May 27. In Delhi, partly cloudy skies, light drizzle, and dust storms are predicted through May 26. Maximum temperature is likely to hover around 37ยฐC, with humidity contributing to discomfort despite possible showers offering brief relief.
Maharashtra (Konkan & Goa): Heavy rainfall likely till May 28.
Eastern India (Bihar, Assam, West Bengal): Rainfall warnings are in place for several districts over the next few days.
