Punjab Yellow Alert for Rain in 14 Districts as Monsoon Surpasses Average

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for rainfall in 14 districts of Punjab, as the third phase of the monsoon comes to an end. The state has received 103.4 mm of rainfall so far this season — about 13% more than the average monsoon rainfall of 91.7 mm for the period from June 1 to July 9.

The alert comes after overnight showers in Mohali, and applies today to Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Ludhiana, Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala, and Sangrur. Other districts are expected to witness normal weather conditions.

Five Dry Days Ahead

Despite the alert today, the weather is expected to remain clear for the next five days across the state, with no new warnings issued. Day temperatures are likely to rise slightly, but humidity levels will remain high, potentially causing discomfort.

District-wise Rainfall Performance

There is significant disparity in rainfall across the state. While Ludhiana has received 181.9 mm and Amritsar 163.4 mm, both well above average, seven districts have recorded 58% less rainfall than normal. These underperforming districts include Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Mohali, Sangrur, Bathinda, and Muktsar.

Today’s Weather Forecast for Major Cities

  • Amritsar: Cloudy skies with a chance of rain; temperatures between 25°C and 30°C.

  • Jalandhar: Cloudy with possible rainfall; temperatures between 27°C and 31°C.

  • Ludhiana: Cloudy with light showers expected; temperature range 26°C to 32°C.

  • Patiala: Cloudy skies, likely rainfall; temperature range 26°C to 31°C.

  • Mohali: Cloudy and humid, with rain likely; temperatures 26°C to 33°C.

As the monsoon progresses, Punjab is witnessing both above-average precipitation and uneven distribution, which may affect agriculture and urban infrastructure differently across regions.
