Observed annually on May 5, World Hand Hygiene Day aims to raise awareness about the importance of hand hygiene, especially in healthcare facilities, hospitals, and daily life. After the COVID-19 pandemic, public awareness around hand hygiene has grown significantly.
This year, the World Health Organization (WHO) has chosen the theme:
“Gloves may be there, but it’s always hand hygiene.”
The message is clear: while gloves may provide a barrier, proper hand hygiene is always essential. Germs can still exist on the outer surface of gloves, making it necessary to wash hands before and after any task, even when gloves are worn.
Hands are a primary route for viruses and bacteria to enter the body, causing infections such as diarrhea, colds, and flu.
Washing hands not only protects you, but also your family and community from infections.
Washing hands with soap and water for 20–30 seconds, or using a hand sanitizer when necessary, remains the most effective method to stop the spread of infections.
Gloves serve only as a barrier, but germs can remain on the surface of the gloves.
It is mandatory to wash hands before putting on gloves and after removing them, especially in hospitals or healthcare settings.
Before eating
After using the bathroom
After returning home from outside
Before and after caring for children, the elderly, or the sick
After touching or playing with animals
Hand hygiene is a simple yet life-saving habit.
Wearing gloves does not completely prevent infection — handwashing is always essential.
