Vice Presidential Election Process Begins After Jagdeep Dhankhar’s Resignation

New Delhi, July 23, 2025 – Following the resignation of Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar from the post of Vice President of India, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially initiated the process for electing the country’s next Vice President.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, through its Gazette Notification S.O.3354(E) dated July 22, 2025, formally notified the resignation. As per Article 324 of the Indian Constitution, the Election Commission is empowered to conduct elections to the office of the Vice President.

The Vice Presidential election is conducted in accordance with the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, and the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974.

Preparatory Steps Underway

The ECI has already begun preparatory activities, with the official election schedule to be announced shortly upon their completion. Key activities currently underway include:

  1. Preparation of the Electoral College, which comprises both elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.

  2. Finalisation of Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officers to oversee the conduct of the election.

  3. Compilation and dissemination of background materials related to all previous Vice Presidential elections in India.

What’s Next

While the exact date for the election has not yet been announced, the Election Commission confirmed that the process is progressing swiftly and the schedule will be released soon.

This election holds national significance as it follows an unexpected resignation from one of the country’s top constitutional positions. The new Vice President will be elected by an electoral college of both Houses of Parliament, and the position holds key responsibilities, including chairing the Rajya Sabha (Council of States).
